Speaking, listening, reading, and writing tibetan
Learning a language is not only learning one skill, but developing your ability in the fours skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. At Tibetan Online School, we have an integrated approach to encourage development in all of these areas, with the primary focus being able to confidently express yourself in Tibetan. True exchange is established with the teacher, who gently and patiently introduces new concepts and vocabulary as the student progresses.
Another area of focus, especially in the beginning stages of learning will be on mastering the sounds and pronunciation of Tibetan words. Gradually, the mind becomes accustomed to new sounds and retains the words more easily.
We believe that in order to facilitate communication and easy exchanges, it is important to develop a relationship or trust between the student and his/her teacher. So, the school makes every effort to ensure that student can continue his/her learning Tibetan language continuously with the same teacher.
Tibetan Reading and Writing
Just as in any language, there are many styles of writing in Tibetan. The two main styles we focus on learning at Tibetan Online School are informal, i.e. language that is written as it is spoken, and philosophical, i.e. the language used in Buddhist texts. For understanding the second type of writing, it is necessary to learn many new vocabulary words which are specific to the Dharma.
Courses in Buddhist Religion and Philosophy
For the students who are primarily interested in studying Buddhist texts, a special curriculum has been developed by teachers of Tibetan Online School, which focuses on learning vocabulary and concepts related to Dharma texts. Advanced students will have the opportunity to benefit from courses in Buddhist religion and philosophy by Skype taught by qualified geshes (monastic equivalent to a PhD in Buddhist philosophy)
A beginning student will start by learning the sounds and alphabet in Tibetan, and gradually increase his/her knowledge through speaking and listening, learning new vocabulary, phrases, and conversational grammar.
Intermediate students can use their sessions to review material they may have already encountered, increase their fluency, and learn more complicated grammatical constructions. More advanced students often use the tutorials to ask specific questions, or to simply maintain their level through practicing. Your teacher will design lessons that match your needs and level of knowledge, with explanations, exercises and homework designed specifically for you!
We do our best to make sure that our students keep the same teachers throughout the learning process. We work hard to create a pleasant work atmosphere. So, please give us a try! The first class is free.
